No discussion on ISAF supply with Gen Kayani says Gen Allen

Rawalpindi - 14th December 2011

During telephonic conversation between General Jhon Allen and General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani (HI) on 12 December 2011, the issue of reopening up of ISAF (international security assistance force)  supply route never came under discussion as has been highlighted in the statements of Commander ISAF. It would be appreciated that unnecessary speculation in this regard is avoided.

Last month on 26th November 2011 the ISAF supply was closed because of ISAF airstrike which killed 25 Pakistan Army men at Sala check-post. General Kayani took a serious notice of this and took necessary measure to react against future attack from the other side of the boarder.  Some of the major measures by the COAS were finishing the chain of command in army, ordering shooting down of ISAF drones, evacuating Shamsi and upgrading air defence system at Pak-Afghan border.

In last few weeks the Pak-US relationship has gone from bad to worst.

Air Defense system upgraded at Pak-Afghan border

Peshawar - 9th December 2011

Today on Friday Pakistan has upgraded its air defence system on the Afghan border to make it capable of shooting down aircraft, after ISAF (International security Assistance Force) air-strike which ended up killed 25 Pakistan Army's soldiers.

The upgrade also include a fully equipped air defence system on the Pak-Afghan border. It has the capability to trace and detect any invader aircraft from the order side of the border. The step had been taken to avert air incursions from Afghanistan and to respond to any future air strikes. The system has also been upgraded to immediately respond after detecting any aircraft or helicopter and to shoot it down.

Pakistan shut its border to ISAF supply convoys on 26th November, the same day as the deadliest single cross-border attack of the 10-year war in Afghanistan. The government also ordered the United States to clear out the Shamsi air base in the southwest, widely reported as a hub in the covert CIA drone war against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Pakistan’s border area with Afghanistan. Pakistan gave tacit support to the programme, but no US drone strike has been reported on Pakistani soil since 17th November 2011.

The November 26 attacks brought the fragile Pakistani-US alliance to a fresh low, already reeling from an American stealth raid that killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Abottabad on 2nd May 2011. It was after that raid, conducted by US Navy SEALs who flew in from Afghanistan.

US President Barack Obama has expressed condolences over the November 26 border deaths, insisting it was not a “deliberate attack” by ISAF as claimed by the Pakistani army.

ISAF supply suspension continued on 13th day

Torkham - 8th December 2011

Today on Thursday the blockade of supplies to ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) in Afghanistan continued on Thursday on the 13th day. Pakistan closed ISAF supply line after the deadly strike on two Pakistani posts in Mohmand Agency and killed 24 soldiers dead on November 26

The ISAF-spearheaded operation slackened in Afghanistan hinged mainly on the supplies including fuel and other commodities routed through Pakistan, as according to Afghan officials, the ISAF whittled down their activities and anti-terror operations owing to shortage of oil.

The operation underway in several districts of Kandahar has been left unfinished with the ISAF troops settled back at their barracks. Meantime, ISAF’s routine actions are being adversely impacted, as according to unnamed Afghan sources, if the situation persists, reserves of eatables hitherto available with the armed forces will soon be exhausted.
